The Many Faces of Nina Simone--Oh How Much and How Long Have I Loved Nina Simone?

Nina- To Be Young, Gifted, and Black

Revolution-Nina Simone

Lyrics

And now we got a revolution
Cause i see the face of things to come
Yeah, your Constitution
Well, my friend, its gonna have to bend
Im here to tell you about destruction
Of all the evil that will have to end.

Some folks are gonna get the notion
I know theyll say im preachin hate
but if i have to swim the ocean
well i would just to communicate
its not as simple as talkin jive
the daily struggle just to stay alive

Singin about a revolution
because were talkin about a change
its more than just air pollution
well you know you got to clean your brain
the only way that we can stand in fact
is when you get your foot off our back

Nina Simone-Revolution

I heard Shirley Bassey on Democracy Now tonight and that made me so giddy! I am such a queen....
I wanted to build on the theme of my last post, with the idea that the society we live in is sick. One of the clearest symptoms of this is the hostility that is housed in the language that has become part of the vernacular of our times--clear across popular culture.I wanted to address these issues because of the recent verbal abuse flung at Tiger Woods( and though he may make nothing of it, the larger Black community has and rightfully will. A white, female journalist in a joking manner--and I want to stress that --in a joking manner, said that he should be lynched. Ignoring the entire legacy of racism and lynching, this person now feels comfortable in making light of the dehumanization and murder of Black men. I posted a long time ago about the time that I was at a restaurant, when I was still in Lafayette, and a girl sitting at the table next to mine was on the phone with one of her friends and she was laughing and chatting and telling the friend on the phone that one of her other friends was just "so gay" and that she should just "kill him" because of it. The horrid part of it is that she was making fun-joking-as she said it. A bit of the carnivalesque? And this phrase "thats so gay" has become permeated throughout American youth culture. It is the privileged idea that you can ignore and need not respect the humanity of other people. This society has taught and teaches its children that the degradation and dehumanization of the Other is perfectly acceptable--that that which fits outside of the defined norm can be obliterated and degraded. This is unacceptable and I for one demand the recognition of my integrity- with no exceptions and no compromises. Progressive people must work to rebuild this society into a more holistic, egalitarian one and to rebuild it as one with its humanity intact, one with respect and dignity for all. More and more I am reminded of what bell hooks said--that the powers that be took Martin Luther King's dream of each person having their needs met and living with recognition of one's integrity and with respect and dignity--and these powers have hollowed that message out and turned it into something that serves the purposes of capitalism. "Each for what they can get. We all have the equal right to consume..." We must return to humanitarian values or else we are in trouble.

School Shootings

This culture is sick. People in this country think they live in utopia and don't need to reevaluate how they live. The people of this country are in dire need of reevaluating their value system and the way they live.
The other day I found the address for the school that was named for Fess MacDavid's first wife. The scool was located on Hardaway street in Montgomery
Everyday I am more and more convinced that the best way to get rid of patriarchy is to remain beautiful and free in spite of it. What a process, but oh how worth it.

Patriarchy

I listen to tne television...and to popular culture in general and it is troubling that we nave returned to the era of "keep an eye on your neighbor." A good example of this is the line in the zonic commercial "friend or no friend, Ill turn you in." I think we need to reconsider the way we live in this world and we need to eliminate (castrate?) patriarchy in order to liberate ourselves and live more fully, freely, and wholly, in the world.

Project Runway

Tiki Barber is sooo hot! Let me design for him lol.

Reasons Why I Love O

I Love O Magazine. I learn so much from it and I love to learn. This month's interview with Sally Field is very informative. I have learned a lot from Sally Field over the years. I especially took a lot from her interview on the Actors Studio.

Say No To Bush's Wiretapping Legislation

Everyone should be on the phone calling their representatives and telling them to stand against George Bush's wiretapping program. This man has to be stopped.

Revelation

I finally understand, after many years, the sentiment of Shirley Maclaine's Charity in Sweet Charity at the end of the film. I very much understand it now.

I so want to see The Other Boleyn Sister. It should be intriguing.

Poem I was Inspired to Write this Morning

The white automaton
stood before me
demanding conformity and consent
the ultimate of peace in the ultimate of war

Death drive and destruction
cloaked in the vise of a lamb
demand a rendering of my power
so that it can better stand
to rape, malign, and make war
I think not and underscore
the fact that in this house
of the universe
where all humanity rests
the strongest and the meanest of us
with blood flowing through our veins
will learn with surest certainty
the meaning of human pain.

Repost

I love this response. bell hooks' reports that in response to a letter from a white farm boy concerning the solution to the "Negro Question," Lorraine Hansberry wrote

"the condition of our people dictates that what can only be called revolutionary attitudes.... I Think, then, that Negroes must concern themselves with every single means of struggle:legal, illegal, passive, active, violent, and nonviolent. That they must harrass, debate, petition, give money to court struggle,sit-in,lie-down,strike,boycott,sing hymns, pray on steps-and shoot from their windows when the racists come cruising through their communities."

There is a reason why I love Lorraine Hansberry.
This morning, I thought about my time at Price. The first two years I was in Aunt Johnnie's classroom, Head Start and Kindergarten. The third year they placed me in Mrs. Bull's class. I also thought about the time Aunt Johnnie's car broke down on the expressway and Mrs. Bull was behind us and gave us a ride to school. What fond memories.

U.S. Government Harrasses Puerto Rican Activists

Democracy Now also reported tonight that U.S. federal authorities are harrassing Puerto Rican Independence activists. Avelino Gonzalez Claudio has been arrested on charges related to a 1983 bank robbery. Everyone should throw there support behind the Puerto Rican people and their push for independence and self-determination.

U.S. EvilDoings in Bolivia

There needs to be some castration going on. Democracy Now ran a story tonight about u.s. officials, acting on either official or unofficial policy of the United States government, asking Fulbright Scholars and Peace Corp Volunteers in Bolivia to spy on Cubans and Venezuelans present in Bolivia. The story was broke when 2007 Fulbright Scholar, Alexander Von Schaick, contacted independent journalist, Jean Friedman Rudovsky, and expressed his concern that a u.s. official at the u.s. embassy in Bolivia asked Schaick and other Fulbright Scholars during a security briefing to "report to the embassy the names and locations of Cubans and Venezeualans that they encountered in Bolivia." After some investigating, it was uncovered that the same thing had been asked of Peace Corp recruits, at which Peace Corp officials lodged a complaint with the State Department about this violation of international law and breach of the goals and aims of the Peace Corp program. So far, it has not been reported that the Fulbright Program has done the same.

The u.s. government has declared that these two separate incidents were "abberations" but journalist Bengamin Dangl says that it is a part of a larger effort on the part of the Bush adminstration to destabilize the government of President Evo Morales in Bolivia. The u.s. government, through the USAID program has channeled millions of dollars to right-wing groups in Bolivia in the effort of decentralizing the Bolivian government, giving greater autonomy to right-wing forces within the country with the intended results of toppling Evo Morales as president of Bolivia. USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy have both been used as tools by the Bush administration in these efforts. Please read the interview that Amy does with Schaick, Rudovsky, and Dangl above. This is a serious affront to the integrity of people all across the globe to define their own destiny and choose the ways in which they intend to live.

I Had to Post This One

Stevie Wonder for Barak Obama

(Re)Post

My First Memory

My first memory of a Radical Blackness was in Headstart or in some early point during my time at Price Elementary School when they held a celebration during Black HIstory Month to commemorate the making of MLK's birthday into a federal holiday. As we endted the auditorium, I saw the emblazoned, life-sized figures of Black faces hanging on posters from the ceiling: Bill Cosby, Angela Davis, Lena Horne, and Maya Angelou are some that I remember. These were beautiful black faces, and the auditorium reverbrated as the sound of Stevie Wonder's voice bounced off the wall as he sang "Happy Birthday," his tribute to Dr. King. It was Black pride and Black assertiveness in a school where most of the children's faces were of color- either black or brown.

My Elementary school was a beautiful school as I remember. It seemed either grey or light green on the outside, contrasting the off white and colorful murals on the side walks with a welcoming asphald playground where I used to swing and play house in the monkey bars. I never climbed just to climb. I was different. Inside was good as were sheltered by mostly endearing black faces with an occassional white one appearing, such as Aunt Johnnie's good friend and my teacher for one year while I was there at Price, Mrs. Bull. It was especially the case for me, as my Aunt Johnnie was given care for my tutelage from the time I was three years old-- from Head Start to first grade. This has led to the wicked side of me-- my vanity and somewhat snobbishness. I did feel special during my time there at Price, and I was taken care of by my aunts and the others there around me. I felt like an exception. I loved school, and even more so I loved learning.

My childhood was shrouded in some magical cloud where I spent the considerable part of my time -- in the libraries, museums, and engaged intellectually, pondering the things of the world. There was an excited energy around my youth, from my parents involvement in and the immediacy of the Jackson and Washington campaings and my aunts and grandmother's participation in the Chicago Teacher's Union. Although they were not dyed-in - the-wool progressives, this involvement on their part allowed me a premature taste of the ideology and the vision and the urgency of Blackpride and its commitment to progressive struggle. I dont know how much of my awareness was due to their involvement and how much was just my being there in Chicago. The entire city was possessed by an energy and a zeal that was daily fed to the masses of people-- on television, through social activist networks, and through word of mouth interaction.

I remember the elation of Washington's election as mayor and I remember the intense sadness and futile loss of his death. I remmeber the power and vision of Jesse Jackson's bid for presidency and the unity felt in his political message. The beauty of that time was real and inspiring and the legacy of those people in progressive movement created the context and the background for my political development and my growth as a human being concerned with the welfare of humanity and the eradication of oppression for people across the globe.

My background is spotted with movments of progressivisim and elements that provide a backdrop for my formation as a person of consciousness. My mother and other members of my family were involved with the Frank London Brown Historical Society, which sounds like a very progressive group that met periodically to host discussions on issues of the black community, black history, and the legacy of progressive struggle, and hosted very notable figures that addressed the group and had ties to several celebrity figures that were local. Not only was my mother present in the organization, but also Aunt Johnnie, Uncle Archie, and Cousin Fannie. My mother's participation ended when the organization was raided. Government crackdowns on progressive entities brought my mother's enlightnment to a halt. I know absolutely nothing else about this organization, not even whether it is still in existence.

My Uncle Archie, who was a member of the group, was apparently a friend and neighbor of Dick Gregory's. My Uncle Donald was tied to, if not a member of, the Black Panther Party. My uncle is very a very progressive-oriented man- he gave me a copy of Langston Hughes' "I Wonder as I Wander" when I was thirteen years old. That book enlightened me in many ways and opened my eyes to the world as I learned about the Chinese and watermelons floating down the Mekong River, and Russian peasants in Tashkent sipping from a communal bowl of tea.....

A Beautiful Song I Heard On The Radio This Morning

Check it out, ya'll
(There've been times in my life)
I'm tired and I wanna give up
(I've been wondering why)
Why is the world gettin' so crazy?
(Still, somehow I believe)
I've come too far to die now
(I always survive)
If you're a survivor, get up!
Let's get it!

Gonna cry now, go ahead and get it out of my system
I know I hurt now, but soon I gotta get back to livin'
Can't be here next year, givin' you these same tears
I hope you enjoyed it, 'cause it's the last time you will take a piece of me

I start right now, I don't know how I'm gonna get thru it
I know right now, I pray somehow 'cause I can't do it
I can't keep livin' like this, there's gotta be more than this
Jesus, I'm ready, I'm ready for what you have for me

Chorus
(Are you gonna wait for a sign?)
Are you ready for you're miracle
God's people it's time to'(stand up and fight)
Let's get it, let's get it'This is it!!
You can't mess with my mind anymore'This is it!
I'm smarter, see I've been here before'This is it!
It's time today, I'm not afraid anymore'This is it!
Yes, I believe, if you believe, help me say'This is it!

I'm a child of the King baby, look at somebody and tell 'em'This is it!

I look back now, I look at how you tried to break me
To take my life, my peace of mind and drive me crazy
My self esteem, my dreams, my destiny
So, God allowed it, because He knew He had big plans for me (Hallelujah!)
It's your grace, I know today it's how I made it (Thank You, Jesus)
When I thought that it was over' (Lord, have mercy)

Chorus

Everybody that's been holdin' you down, look at 'em and tell 'em'This is it!
I feel my help coming on right now, ya'all'

You think that maybe it's over'(You're life ain't over)
Not unless you want it to be

(Are you gonna wait for a sign?)'you're miracle
(stand up and fight)

Rap
This is it ya'll, this is it ya'all
You've been waitin' and debating , here it is, ya'll
All your stuff from your past, shake it off ya'll
Though they said you wouldn't last, but who is ya'll?
Want your dreams back? Let's get it!
Your peace of mind back? Let's get it!
Want your family back? Let's get it!
Are you ready? Let's get it! (This is it!)
I speak against everything that comes to destroy the purpose in your life'This is it!
Worrying about your finances, your future, when you can't even sleep at night'This is it!
I speak against depression and fear, every attack from the enemy'This is it!
This is your day, the Lord made it baby! God has set you free!'This is it!

You can't mess with my mind anymore'This is it!
I'm smarter, see I've been here before'This is it!
It's time today, I'm not afraid anymore'This is it!
I wanna hear ya'll sing this with your boy!
Every body say'This is it!

You can't mess with my mind anymore'This is it!
I'm smarter, see I've been here before'This is it!
It's time today, I'm not afraid anymore'This is it!
Yes, I believe, if you believe, help me say'This is it!

Amazing Barbra

Alone Again

From Confusion Of Genders

How could a love like ours come to an end
We had it all but lost it 'round the bend
There's something that I'll never understand
Why now it seems like hurting's close at hand

But I'm alone again, alone again
Though the years that pass divide us
I am alone again, alone again
Something'll never keep us apart

I Keep

Jill Scott

Some of them wanna break you down, steal your crown
Use and abuse you.
Some of them smile in your face, cause they heard it some place,
You got more then their used to
Some of them want to steal your love, ooh
Cuz they’re jealous of …how you’re living and giving.
I keep
Moving forward, pressing onward, striving further
I keep
Keep on laughing, keep on living, keep on loving yeah
I keep
Keep on dreaming keep on achieving, keep on believing
I keep
I keep smiling when I come thru …and I cry when I need too.
Some of them, oh they stab you in your back, cuz it̢۪s love they lack.
Some of them won’t even try …to see the good inside.
But I ….
I keep
Moving forward, pressing onward, striving further
I keep
Keep on laughing, keep on living, keep on loving yeah
I keep
Keep on dreaming keep on achieving, keep on believing
Hey. Oh oh oh
I keep on , keep on living, keep on learning , keep on smiling ooh ooh yeah
Keep on laughing, keep on living, keep on loving yeah
I keep
Keep on dreaming, keep on believing, keep on achieving.
I keep smiling when I come thru, and I cry when I need to
(Adlib below)
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yea yea yeah
I keep on , keep on keeping on.
Yea. I keep ,keep on keep keepin on keep keeping on

My Petition

Jill Scott

You say you mean good for me
But you don't do it
You say you have a plan but you just don't go thru with it
You say you know the way to go
And I should follow
But all of your empty promises
Leave me hollow

And oh
How do I trust you
How do I love you
When you
Lie to me repeatedly
And oh
How do I have faith, in you
When you just don't come thru
Like you say you could

Oh, say can you see [2x]

You say that I'm wrong for
Stating my opinion to you
You say that I'm wrong and there'll be quiet consequences too
But I know my rights babe
There'll be no law abridging
The freedom of my speech
Or the right for me to petition for a remedy of grievances

And I want to trust you
I want to love yeah
But you lie to me repeatedly
And oh I want to have faith in you
But you just don't come thru
Like you said you could
Oh say can you see
Hmmm

I want fresh fruit, clean water,
Air that I don't see
I want the feeling of being safe on my streets
I want my children to be smarter than me
I want, I want to feel
I want to feel, I want to feel free
For real ya'll
I'm just telling you so you know
I want to, I want to have faith in you
I really do but you keep lying to me
It hurts
I believe, I believe you owe it me
Give it to me like you said you would
Hmmm
Oh say can you see
Hmmm
Oh say can you see
Oohh say can you see
Hmmm
By the dawn's early light

Resemblance

I have said for many years that my grandfather looks like an older version of James Carville. When I was little, the surest way to irritate my father was to tell him that his father was all but a white man. This is a picture of my grandfather right before he died, the darkest he had ever been in his life. The other is a picture of James Carville.

The Second Meanest Man in Autauga County

My great-great grandfather Morgan Goodson was known, during his lifetime and after, as the meanest man in Autauga County. The second meanest man, of a younger generation than my great-great grandfather was my great-grandfather's, John Archie Deramus' first cousin, Archie Broadnax. They said one time a white man began bothering him while he was in a store in town. They said Archie pulled out his knife and cut that man everywhere but on the soles of his feet. Whites in town were demanding justice and were wanting to get ahold of him, so Archie took refuge in the swamp. They say the sheriff sent word by his wife telling him that "when he got ready and if he felt like it, he could come down and turn himself in."

Black Culture

Witnessing what my sister and niece and nephew watch, I see some interesting things. I think Katt Williams, as a gay male, creates an interesting space in Black culture. I think that his place in the social construction of the black community should be analyzed thoroughly. I just want to write briefly here.

From Equality Alabama

UCLA's Williams Institute Releases New Study on Alabama Same-Sex Couples

On January 15th, the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law released a new research study providing demographic and economic information about the more than 8,500 same-sex couples in Alabama. The study shows that about 25% of the same-sex couples in Alabama are raising an estimated 3,309 children. The study also shows that same-sex couples, especially those raising children, have fewer economic resources and own homes at a significantly lower rate than their heterosexual, married counterparts.

KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE:

There are an estimated 94,639 gay, lesbian, and bisexual people (single and coupled) currently living in Alabama.
Same-sex couples live in every county in Alabama and constitute 0.8% of coupled households and 0.5% of all households in the state. Jefferson County reported the most same-sex couples with 1,488 couples (0.57% of all households in the county), followed by Mobile County with 800 couples (0.53%), and Madison County with 430 couples (0.39%). The counties with the highest percentage of same-sex couples are Perry County (0.72% of all county households), Hale County (0.64%), Choctaw County (0.63%), and Bullock County (0.63%).
Contrary to a popular stereotype, the annual earnings of men in same-sex couples are significantly lower than those of married men. On average, men in same-sex couples in Alabama earn $29,377 each year, significantly less than $43,207 for married men. The median income of men in same-sex couples in Alabama is $25,000, or 26% less than that of married men ($34,000).

Women in same-sex couples in Alabama earn an average of $23,582 per year (with a median of $18,000), more than married women, whose earnings average $22,311 (with a median of $18,500). Women in same-sex couples earn less than married men as well as men in same-sex couples.

Something Useful From Gsy.com

I just read a very good article on gay.com about the differences between pleasure-oriented and goal-oriented sex. It has brought me back into the light a bit. I have been familiar with these concepts and the value of a pleasure-based lifestyle-whether in sex or in other parts of life. But as the story goes, of course, I have gotten caught up in the need to accomplish. Even though I have espoused and spoken out against such ways of thinking, I too have been caught up in that linear/restricted way of thinking. LIBERATION

Twelfth Radical Progressive Carnival

It has been a long while since the last edition of the Radical Progressive Carnival. Here, without further ado, is the twelfth edition of the RPC. There are several entries for this edition, with some random and interesting topics running throughout the posts.Adventures in Daily Living and Beno Varghese strongly advocate for Ron Paul as president of the United States. Suzanne of Daily Living urges readers to listen to a video of Ron Paul castigating the conservative guard for their policies on preemptive war and for the injustice of the way in which our current system is structured--with corporate ownership of the government--which is of course fascism.Meanwhile, Philaahzophy makes the case why anarchsists should vote for Ron Paul.

Blogfabulous, a new contributor, offers up a fabulous and hilarious assessment on the the politics of underwear and her eureka moment in having found the joy, pleasure, and liberation of wearing men's underwear as opposed to the problematic world of women's underwear-in searching for fit, ride-up-ability(or lack their of), and comfort.

Next, Phil for Humanity makes an interesting connection between the knights of medeival lore and their modern-day counterparts-mercenaries--ala Blackwater. Very intriguing connections there... In a later post, Phil argues for the eradication of governments led by charismatic leaders such as monarchs, tyrants, and religious zealots.

On a somewhat related theme, Menstrual poetry relates to us the twisted right-wing concepts of the purity and integrity balls which teach young women that they should be "pure" for their husbands on their wedding nights and teach young men to honor and value the "purity" of chaste women. Thanks Menstrual Poetry for keeping an eye on these topics so that others of us don't have to tread down those paths...

Innovation Politics proposes a new system of governing in which the populous will not just simply vote for candidates for office, but will vote on
every policy issue that arises, thereby holistically shaping party platforms as well as the public agenda. That is a lot of voting, but it would be interesting to see how that would work out.

Afro-Presencia informs us of the sponsored trips to Ecuador started by soccer player Ulises Hernan de la Cruz. The purpose of these trips is to promote the Afro-Ecuadoran community, particularly in the history and legacy of the town of Piquiucho.

Consequences of Republicanism, who is backing Kucinich, calls for a worldwide boycott of American goods due to the U.S.'s failure to act on environmental issues. On a similar note,The Frugal Tree Hugger offers us an environmental piece, filled with terms that I must say I don't understand.

Greg Laden bemoans and lambasts the religious right for their recent criticism of Richard Dawkins, who apparently sang some Christmas carols, even though he is an athiests. He powerfuly makes the case that people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions can congregate, bake bread, and have community. Laden also weighs in on the debate concerning Creationism vs. Evolution.

Turning to pop culture, Dominate Your Life weighs in on the recent controversy surrounding Will Smith in which zionists organizations such as the ADL tried to portray him as being an admirer of hitler. Meanwhile,Samuel Bryson of Total Well-being urges the masses to take up pedaling or cycling as an environmentally friendly mode of travel. Finally, we have David Ortez arguing for making music piracy and downloading legal.

Lastly, I will offer my analysis of the contention between the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, in which I point to the historical pattern in the United States of Black men existing higher on the totem pole than white women and that history is on the side of Barack Obama becoming the next president of the United States. This has also been espoused(at a later date I might add) by such bigwigs as Gloria Steinem in her article on the election which appeared in the New York Times.

I hope you find the offerings for this edition of the carnival enjoyable, informative, and stimulating. Cheers!
They have revived Rambo in order to try and make Americans feel better about themselves. The Vietnam delusion revived....you lost the war people.

What is the Amero?

Today, in conversation, I heard someone speaking about the emergence of the Amero as the currency that will take the place of the dollar once it fizzles out(which it is steadily and increasingly doing). In essence, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico would all come under the same currency, modeled after the Euro. I want to come out and state my opposition to such a measure now.

More on Border Landowners

Michael Chertoff says that he "can't accept" the fact that these landowners won't give up their land. He can go to hell, drop dead, and fuck off before someone castrates him.

Landowners on the U.S.- Mexico Border Stand Ground and Fight Back

The top story on CNN.com right now is about landowners on the border between the U.S. and Mexico who are refusing to give up their land for the U.S. to build a wall. The Justice Department is issuing lawsuits against them. We should all stand in support of these landowners and with the immigrants who cross the border each and every day.

Lobotomy

I think the issue of psychosurgery and state-sanctioned medical practices against communities and individuals is a very important topic.People should read the above wiki-article concerning lobotomies. It gave some very disturbing details on the afflictions of Rosemary Kennedy--who instead of having been mentally handicapped as I previously thought, according to this, was instead given a lobotomy by her father, Joseph Kennedy to control her mood swings. This area is a critical and tumultuous area where the personal and the political collide. People need to be aware of these issues and how they have affected individuals and populations.

The History of Blacklists in the U.S.-From HungryBlues

HungryBlues delivers an interesting post on the historical uses of Black lists in the United States and how deeply entrenched the legacy of Blacklists, HUAC, and other government spying programs are entrenched in the American Fabric.

Scientists are Trying to Rewrite History

AOL carried an article today about scientists who have "found evidence" that syphillis was carried to Europe from the New World. I guess this is meant to refute the fact that the white men on their big white horses who came to the New World already had syphillis in many instances and also meant to try and refute the use of germ warfare against native americans--giving them syphillis infected blankets, the use of rape to spread disease,etc,etc....Oh how people work...

Gloria Steinem and Melissa Harris Lacewell Debate Race and Gender Issues Between Clinton and Obama

I so love it that Gloria Steinem's analysis and my own--which I gave in the post found here are so in sync--although she is supporting Hillary and I am supporting Barak. I think Gloria does make some importaint points in this debate while Harris-Lacewell ignores the fact that Black men sat in both houses of Congress from the time they got the vote until well after Reconstruction(holding on with just one and then a few). The totem pole cannot be denied.... Overall, I think this was a very intriguing debate.

Introducing OWN....

TV Queen Oprah Winfrey will now get her own network, The Oprah Winfrey Network. Way to go girl...
CNN and other media outlets continue to speak of race as the only divisive factor in this presidential race. As if it would just be too complicated to say "race and gender." As if it were some kind of potion that if thrown on them they would melt away like the wicked witches they are....

The Fact Is(I Need You)

Jill Scott

I can pay my own light bill baby
Pump my own gas in my own car
I can buy my own shoe collection
I've been blessed thus far
I can kill the spider above my bed
Although it's hard because I'm scared
I can even stain and polyurethane
But some things just don't change
I need you yeah
Sometimes so hard to say oh
I need you
Some things remain
I could buy my own groceries baby
Get my hair tight, my nails right
I can floss my own bling bling
Write the words to the songs I sing
I can even raise the child we'll make
Make sure he's loved and knows what God gave us
I can teach him how to walk and stand
But he needs you to help him be a man
We need you
So hard to say
We need you
Some things don't change
I could be congresswoman
Or a garbage woman or
Police officer, or a carpenter
I could be a doctor and a lawyer and a mother and a good girl
God what you've done to me
Kind of lover I could be
I could be a computer analyst, the Queen with the nappy hair raising her fist
Or I could be much more and a myriad of this
Hot as the summer, sweet as the first kiss
And even though I can do all these things
I need you
And even though I can do all these things
We need you
We need you
We need you
And even though I can do all these things by my damn self
I need you
I do, I do, I do, I do
And even though I can do all these things
I need you
We need you
We do
We need you yeah
We need you

The View-Hot Topics

I have to agree with Elizabeth on one thing-I believe everything is scripted with the Clinton campaign.

Not the one I want, but here is a german family during the depression under the Weimar Republic, toting a wheelbarrow full of Deutschmarks, who cannot buy bread. A loaf of bread cost 5,000,000,000 deutsch marks.
Those in the know have been saying for at least four years now that the United States is looking for war with Iran.

Someone should tell George Bush to go to hell.

Malan Breton and Ricki Lake's The Business of Being Born

I must say I am quite excited about Malan Breton's new collection. I can't wait to see it. He says his inspiration came from Deneuve in the 60s. Very interesting stuff. You have to love Deneuve....don't you wish you could have been one of the wives of Roger Vadim...

4 Quadrillon Dollar Lawsuit-On Behalf of the People of Katrina

The victims of Hurricane Katrina have filed a lawsuit against the United States Government for $4,000,000,000,000,000- that is 4 Quadrillion dollars. And I hope they get every penny of it.

Gloria Steinem's Article on This Presidential Election Cycle

Gloria Steinem gives a brilliant assessment of this presidential race between Hillary and Barack. She is saying here exactly what I have said. I encourage everyone to read this article.

Chavez Negotiates Release of Political Prisoners!

Read the story here.
I wonder what the machinations of the U.S. governments are against Nicauragua and what this Eric Volz person has to do with it. It seems very fishy. Viva Ortega!

Barack Obama's Speech in New Hampshire was Very Inspiring

What New Hampshire proves--as far as I can see it, is that this will be a pretty tight race through and through--and all of the pundit-talk that is going on really isnt worth a damn. I still believe that Obama will come out on top of this race--and that the historical trend rests on his side. I encourage all to listen to his speech.

I heard a couple of days ago on Democracy Now that for the first time since the 19th Century, Britain has a higher standard of living than the United States. Imagine the ramifications of that.

(Im)Possible

Cinderella

Impossible,
for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage.
Impossible,
for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage,
And four white mice will never be four white horses!
Such fol-der-ol and fid-dle-dy dee of course, is--- Impossible!

But the world is full of zanies and fools
Who don't believe in sensible rules
And won't believe what sensible people say.
And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep building up impossible hopes,
Impossible things are happening every day.

Impossible!
Impossible!
Impossible!
Impossible!
Impossible!
Impossible!
Impossible!

It's Possible!
For a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage!
It's Possible!
For a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage!

And four white mice are easily turned to horses!
Such fol-der-ol and fid-dle-dy dee of course, is
Quite Possible! It's possible!

For the world is full of zanies and fools
Who don't believe in sensible rules
And won't believe what sensible people say

And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep
building up Impossible hopes
Impossible things are happening every day!

It's Possible!
It's Possible!
It's Possible!
It's Possible!
It's Possible!
It's Possible!
It's Poss-i-ble!

God Bless the Child

Billie Holiday

Them thats got shall get
Them thats not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child thats got his own
Thats got his own

Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets dont ever make the grade
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child thats got his own
Thats got his own

Money, youve got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When youre gone, spending ends
They dont come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But dont take too much
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child thats got his own
Thats got his own

Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child thats got his own
Thats got his own
He just worry bout nothin
Cause hes got his own

God Bless the Child

Music Royalty

Since the dawn of American entertainment, highly accomplished muscians, singers, and other entertainers have been given monikers that distinguish them from the rest in their fields. There is of course,Duke Ellington, "the Duke," Count Basie," Bessie Smith, who was the Empress of the Blues, Mamie Smith who was the Queen of the Blues, Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song, Billie Holiday, who of course was Lady Day and who of course is regarded as the finest jazz vocalist of all time. There was Sarah Vaughan who was "The Divine One" and Dinah Washington was also known as "The Queen of the Blues." There are some today who have given themselves or who have recieved titles. In this post, along with paying tribute to other music royalty,I will bestow some titles of my own titles on those I see fit.

Barbra Streisand-- Empress of Pop
Madonna- Princess of Pop
Patti Labelle- Queen of R&B,
Tina Turner-Queen of Rock and Roll
Aretha Franklin- Queen of Soul
Nina Simone- High Priestess of Soul
Abbey Lincoln-First Lady of Jazz
Mary J. Blige-Queen of R&B/HipHop
John Legend-King of Jazz/R&B
Those in the know says the United States is looking for war with Iran.

One Phrase I am Truly Sick Of

"Radical Islamo-Fascism"- Stop fucking with folks and they won't try to kick your ass.
