Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I did not want to see The Green Mile at first, but I did finally relent and I watched it one weekend while on vacation. I guess the film was "satisfying" to some. In my opinion, The Green Mile is the White majority's Feel Good About Ourselves film of the year. Here we have this Afro-American fellow who is on death row for a crime he did not commit, and a guard, who finds this out and grows into a "friendship" with the convicted man. "Boss" is really upset because he knows that John didn't do it and he is scared of going to hell because he is going to have to execute this man. "John, What will I say on my judgement day when god asks me why I killed one of his select?" It all works out fine in the end, because John assures him that he won't be punished for killing him, as a matter of fact he is doing him a favor, and then gives him the nod to go ahead and flip the switch. Now if that's not reassuring I don't know what is.

To put a little cherry on top of it all, white people got to feel even better when John apologized for "being what I am," mainly a negro who of course is big, ugly, and dumb, as the script would have it- oh but he can also save people, which is why we consider him our friend, "good ol' John." Maybe if he had've lived he could've been a handyman for "Boss." My my, and they didn't give Michael Clarke Duncan an Oscar. He played his part perfectly.
