Todd Gitlin speaks of a tradition of thinking of civilian life as expendable, of carrying out mass murder in a driven cause and lists such people as Hitler and Mao Tse Tung as examples. I don't know how well those two go together, fitting in such a tradition, but I do see that almost every president the United States has ever had fits into such a tradition.
