Adrienne Rich on Lorraine Hansberry

I just recently read Adrienne Rich's essay on Lorraine Hansberry, "The Problem of Lorraine Hansberry." One of the things that struck me was Adrienne's pondering of whether a serious black, female, militant character, such as Beneatha was supposed to be vicariously through the characterization of Walter Lee, would be accepted by white, American audiences. That is an interesting question to ponder. I do see though how such figures have been caricatured in the public sphere, especially in the realm of Blaxploitation films. Very interesting stuff.
