Man, I just heard this cut - looked it up after hearing it just now on the radio and came across your blog here as the first result.
Mavis Staples - wow.
The strength of this is that the song is modern by definition and yet classic in its ethic and aesthetic. This is what I miss about black music - the hymns and their cadences and lyrics that move heart and mind at once.
